TOKYO - A large fire broke out on Sunday in a possible arson attack on a slot machine parlour in western Japan, killing three people and injuring 15 others, police said.

Witnesses told police that a man had sprayed liquid - possibly petrol - before the fire started late afternoon in the city of Osaka, a local police spokesman said.

'We are investigating the case as a possible arson attack,' said the spokesman.

Three people rescued from the gutted 'pachinko' parlour were later confirmed dead, with 15 others treated at hospital, he said.

Television footage showed black smoke pouring out of windows of the six-storey downtown building, with the entrance completely scorched.
