JAKARTA, July 17, 2009 (AFP) - Twin bombings that killed at least nine people at luxury hotels in the Indonesian capital Friday were a "cruel and inhuman attack", Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said. "This undermines the security situation in the country," Yudhoyono said at a press conference broadcast on local television.
President summons police, intelligence chiefs after bomb explosion
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has summoned National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri and State Intelligence Agency (BIN) chief Syamsir Siregar to hear the latest reports on the deadly bomb explosion at the JW Mariott and Ritz Carlton hotels in Kuningan, South Jakarta, on Friday morning.
Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Widodo AS is also among officials summoned to the Palace in regard to the explosion.
"The President has received phone calls on the latest developments in the field, and is now receiving direct reports from the political and security affairs officials, except from the Military Chief who is currently in Yogyakarta," presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng told the press.
"He is still receiving reports on the victims, the situation in the field, and possible clues... The victims comprise both Indonesian and foreign citizens," he added.
Andi said the President had earlier planned to visit the location immediately, but then decided to monitor the situation from the Palace because security officers were still sweeping the area.
"We are all deeply concerned about the incident. Whoever did it are enemies of all of us," Andi said, adding that the President would address a press conference on 2 p.m.
