TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Netizens successfully identified a truck driver who intentionally endangered other travelers on the road and caused his dismissal from the company where he was working as a driver, Apple Daily reported yesterday.
The 27-year-old driver who worked as a truck driver for a company that set up funeral sites was fired by his company after netizens found him and bombarded his company with messages about his unsafe driving practices.
According to the victim surnamed Huang, he was riding his 600 c.c. motorcycle on Wenshan Road in Taipei at around 9 a.m. on Sunday when a truck behind him honked at him.
Startled, Huang slammed on his clutch and pulled away from the truck. But the truck driver overtook Huang at full speed, and cut him off at a sharp angle. The truck driver waved an iron rod at Huang while cursing when the two vehicles were side by side.
Huang captured the entire incident on digital recording because he had surveillance equipment installed on his bike after encountering traffic disputes in the past.
After Huang uploaded the footage onto the Internet, netizens went to work and identified the driver's employer and the company's customer service number. Within 24 hours, the company received over 100 phone calls and Internet messages. The company then announced the dismissal of the driver, citing damages to company image as reason.
The driver told his former boss that he was enraged because Huang was riding unsteadily, sometimes fast and sometimes slow, blocking him.
But his hazardous deeds cost him more than a job, for he has violated traffic laws for reckless driving, which could cost him a fine between NT$6,000 and NT$24,000.
The showing of the iron rod may also constitute criminal intimidation, said an officer from Taipei County Police's Traffic Division. The police have launched an investigation for possible charges yesterday.
