Penataran train plying the Blitar-Surabaya route in East Java hit a woman at Gedangan railway crossing in Sidoarjo on Sunday morning.
The train stopped, reversed and took the victim.
Witness Wahyu Prasetiyo told Antara news agency that the woman, in her thirties, was behind a car while crossing the railway line.
"At the time, Penataran train coming from the South (Blitar to Surabaya) stopped, reversed and took the deceased victim," Wahyu said.
The accident at the railway crossing caused traffic jams as long as one kilometer away.
Gedangan police chief Adj. Comr. Edi P. said the identity of the woman was not yet known and the police were still investigating the accident.
