BEIJING - The death toll from Typhoon Fanapi, which hit China last week, has now reached 100 and the storm has caused more than five billion yuan (S$1 billion) in losses, news reports said Tuesday.

Another 41 people are missing in southern China's Guangdong province, hit hard by the storm after it slammed into Taiwan, according to a Nanfang Daily report posted on the provincial civil affairs department website.

The report said that more than 1.2 million people had been impacted by the storm - the strongest to hit China in years.

Many people have been cut off by flooding, and helicopters have been used to ferry water, food and tents to those stranded in isolated areas.

Fanapi was at its strongest when it hit Taiwan, packing winds of up to 220 kilometres (135 miles) an hour, leaving two people dead and 100 others injured on the island.

This summer, rain-triggered floods and related disasters ravaged wide areas of China, killing more than 3,100 people, leaving more than 1,000 missing, and causing the evacuation of more than 15 million, according to official figures.
