TOKYO - SONY will stop production and sales of rear projection televisions to focus on hot selling flat TVs, a company spokesman said on Thursday.
Sony aims to end production of rear projection televisions in late February, spokesman Shinji Obana said.
'We will shift business resources to liquid crystal display and organic light emitting diode (OLED) televisions.'
Earlier this month Sony launched the world's first OLED television which is just three millimetres thick OLED TVs feature an organic self-luminescent display, which does not require a backlight.
The Sony spokesman said that the company was aiming to end sales of rear projection televisions in North America, the biggest market for the products, in late March.
In other areas, sales will end when the inventory is cleared, he said.
'We have witnessed a downtrend for the rear projection television market in recent years and it doesn't seem to stop,' Mr Obana said.
Sony sold 1.1 million rear projection televisions worldwide in the year to March 2007 but the shipments for the current business year have been cut back to 400,000 from an originally planned 700,000, he said.
The televisions have been manufactured at three plants in Japan, Malaysia and Mexico. -- AFP
