Power failure downs broker's trading system

STOCK-broking firm Phillip Securities' trading system went down on Tuesday afternoon, leaving its customers unable to transact for almost an hour.

Phillip's spokesman Amy Foo said the company had been hit by a power failure.

The Straits Times understands that the power failure affected both Phillip's online trading system, as well as the one used by its in-house traders.

This means that investors who only had an account with Phillip would not be able to trade, although those with multiple trading accounts could transact through another broking firm.

The company was able to fix the problem 'within an hour', said Ms Foo, allowing 'the majority of our clients were able to call their remisiers or dealer to place their trades'.

She declined to say why the company did not have backup generators, how often such incidents happened, or whether the company was doing anything to reduce the incidence of this happening in future.
