Japanese shares climb after Wall Street rebound

>TOKYO, JAPAN - Japanese shares powered higher on Friday, with the broad Topix index rising nearly 2 per cent within minutes after Wall Street rebounded on a government plan for tax rebates to stimulate the US economy.

Advantest Corp rose after high-tech shares jumped in New York, and exporters gained on a slightly weaker yen.

At 9.07am Singapore time, the benchmark Nikkei was up 1.7 per cent at 13,311.36, after gaining 218.58 points. The Topix was up 1.9 per cent at 1,309.45.
