TOKYO, JAPAN - The Tokyo Stock Exchange on Friday suspended futures trading on Topix, the broader index on Asia's largest bourse, due to system trouble, an official said.

"We've suspended the trading of Topix futures as of 10:55 am (9.55 am Singaproe time)," said a spokesman for the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

"The suspension will continue at least for the whole day today as we haven't spotted the cause of the trouble," he said.

Topix, an acronym for the Tokyo Stock Price Index, includes all first-section shares.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange in November 2005 suspended trading in all shares for the first time ever in an embarrassing software glitch that brought stock dealing to a standstill for nearly a day.

The bourse has since pledged to devote resources to improve technology.
