Japan's Nikkei average fell 0.2 per cent on Wednesday, with financial issues such as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group down after their US counterparts slid on a broker warning about losses at Citigroup Inc that sparked more worries about credit market jitters.

As of 8.01am Singapore time, the benchmark Nikkei average was down 19.25 points at 12,973.03.

The broader Topix index shed 0.1 per cent or 1.97 points to 1,263.89. -- REUTERS
