SINGAPORE'S Keppel Corp. said on Wednesday it had secured a contract to build a 205-million-US dollar (S$285 million) oil drilling rig for a Vietnamese company.

Keppel FELS Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine, will construct the rig for PetroVietnam Drilling Investment Corp., a subsidiary of PetroVietnam Drilling & Well Services Corp.

'It is estimated that there will be some 900 exploration wells in Vietnam over the next 15 years,' said Mr Do Van Khanh, chief executive of PV Drilling and chairman of PVD Invest.

PV Drilling intends to invest 1.7-billion-US-dollars (S$2.36 billion) from now until 2025 to build and operate an 11-strong fleet of offshore and onshore rigs, he said.

Keppel is the world's biggest maker of offshore oil drilling rigs.
