M'sia seeking extra 300,000 tonnes rice

>KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - MALAYSIA is negotiating to buy an additional 300,000 tonnes of Thai rice, Thai ambassador to Malaysia Piyawat Niyomrerks said on Tuesday.

'Negotiations between the two governments are currently ongoing,' he said by phone. 'The delivery of the 300,000 tonnes of Thai rice should happen after June.'

Mr Piyawat said Malaysia's state-run rice monopoly, Bernas , on Tuesday bought 200,000 tonnes of Thai rice with 100,000 tonnes of 5-per cent-broken rice variety at $950 (S$1,299) per tonne and another 100,000 tonnes of 15-per cent-broken rice at $940 (S$1,285) per tonne. -- REUTERS
