TOKYO, JAPAN - Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 0.5 per cent on Friday, with exporters such as Toyota Motor coming into favour on a softer yen and after US stocks gained on receding worries about inflation and recession.

As of 8.01am Singapore time, the benchmark Nikkei average added 71.19 points to 14,195.66, extending gains from a 3 per cent rise the previous day.

The broader Topix index climbed 0.7 per cent to 1,389.97.

Government data showed before the market opened that Japanese annual inflation dipped to 0.9 per cent in April from a year earlier, below expectations, while industrial output fell 0.3 per cent in April from a month earlier, matching the median market forecast. -- REUTERS
