WASHINGTON - HEWLETT-PACKARD is recalling about 450,000 fax machines that may overheat and cause burns or catch fire, United States officials said.

The recall involves HP Fax 1010 and HP Fax 1010xi models manufactured from November 2002 through September 2004. The products were made in China.

The company has received three reports of overheating including two that caused minor property damage, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a statement on Friday. No injuries have been reported, the CPSC said.

Consumers should immediately disconnect the fax machines from the electrical power source and contact the company to receive a rebate, the CPSC statement said.

The fax machines were sold at electronic, computer and camera stores nationwide, and also via Internet retailers, for between US$130 and US$150 (S$177 and S$204), the agency said.

About 367,000 of the units were sold in the United States and another 84,000 were sold elsewhere. -- REUTERS
