NEW YORK, US - US stocks opened higher on Monday following an extended holiday weekend break.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 79.71 points (0.71 points) to 11,368.25 in initial market deals.

The Nasdaq composite rose 23.47 points (1.05 per cent) to 2,268.85 while the Standard & Poor's 500 index increased 7.91 points (0.63 per cent) to 1,270.81.

Stocks gained following volatile trading last week, as a report said General Motors was mulling job cuts that could affect thousands more white-collar jobs and considering selling more of its vehicle brands.

The Wall Street Journal report said fresh job cuts would likely be approved when GM's board of directors meets in early August.

Oil prices appeared to be giving the markets some slight relief as prices fell back to around US$142 a barrel after striking highs above US$146 last Thursday. -- AFP
