Asian shares lower at midday

KUALA LUMPUR
The KLCI was at 1,158.21 down 4.88 points at midday.

There were 118 gainers, 286 losers and 194 counters traded unchanged on the Bursa Malaysia.

Turnover was at 171.702 million shares.

HONG KONG
The Hang Seng Index ended the morning session down 447.44 points at 22,283.66

SHANGHAI
Chinese stocks continued sliding on Friday because of concern about a weakening economy, despite news that the government was easing policy in a range of ways to support growth.

The Shanghai Composite Index was down 1.57 per cent at 2,732.275 points at midday, near its intra-day low of 2,724.382. Turnover was very thin.

TOKYO
Japanese share prices fell 2.21 per cent in morning trade Friday after an overnight slump on Wall Street on slower than expected US economic growth and a rise in weekly jobless claims, dealers said.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange's benchmark Nikkei-225 index slid 295.88 points to 13,080.93 by the lunch break. The broader Topix index of all first-section shed 31.67 points or 2.43 per cent to 1,271.95.
