New deputy chairman appointed to EDB

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Manpower, Mr Leo Yip, has been appointed as Deputy Chairman of the Economic Development Board (EDB) with effect from Sept 1.

He will retain his current appointment in the Manpower Ministry (MOM), a post he has held since 2005. According to the Ministry for Trade and Industry press statement, the appointment is expected to allow closer cooperation between EDB and MOM on critical issues like talent attraction efforts and meeting manpower needs for Singapore's economic development.

Background
Mr Yip joined the Singapore Police Force in 1982 on being awarded a Singapore Police Force Overseas Scholarship. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics from Cambridge, and subsequently obtained a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Warwick and a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University.

He served in various capacities in the Singapore Police Force before being appointed Principal Private Secretary to then Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew in 2000. He was appointed Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Manpower in 2002 and was concurrently Chief Executive, Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) from 2003.

Mr Yip was appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Manpower in 2005.
