>SEOUL, Sept 16 - The South Korean won dropped 2.9 percent against the dollar early on Tuesday as huge upheavals in the U.S. financial system over the weekend hit local shares closed on Monday for the Chuseok Thanksgiving holiday.

The won was quoted at 1,141.9/2.4 per dollar as of 0010 GMT, compared with Friday's domestic close of 1,109.1.

On Monday, Lehman Brother Holding Inc filed for bankruptcy protection after trying to finance too many risky assets with insufficient capital, becoming the largest U.S. bankruptcy and the highest-profile casualty of the global credit crisis. Insurer AIG was also struggling to raise funds while investment bank Merrill Lynch was taken over by Bank of America.
