>TOKYO - JAPAN'S Nikkei stock index opened 1.4 per cent lower on Friday amid growing fears of a global recession.

The benchmark Nikkei-225 index fell 124.65 points to 8,774.49 in the first minute of trading.

Global markets tumbled on Thursday after an unprecedented British interest rate cut and a more modest euro zone reduction, which analysts said signalled trouble ahead. -- AFP
