LONDON - BRITISH Airways announced a sharp fall in profits and passenger numbers on Friday as it suffered the fallout from the global financial crisis and high fuel prices.
'This is a good performance given the incredibly difficult trading conditions. The six month period will be remembered as the bleakest on record,' Chief Executive Willie Walsh said in a statement.
The company recorded a net loss of 42 million pounds (S$98.6 million) for the first half of 2008 and said passenger numbers were down by almost four per cent.
Pre-tax profits were down to 52 million pounds from 616 million pounds a year earlier.
