Norway's economy shrinks

OSLO - LEADING oil and gas exporter Norway saw its economy contract by 0.7 per cent in the third quarter owing to a decline in oil and gas production, Statistics Norway said on Tuesday.

For the second quarter, growth was revised downwards to 0.1 per cent, from the 0.6 per cent previously announced.

The decline from the second to the third quarter was attributed to a 3.7 per cent drop in oil and gas production and maritime transports, the statistics agency said.

Mainland gross domestic product, excluding the oil and gas and shipping industries, rose by 0.2 per cent in the third quarter.

That was down from a rise of 0.5 per cent in the second quarter, a figure which the agency revised downwards by half a point. -- AFP
