>TOKYO - JAPAN'S Nikkei stock index opened 0.56 per cent lower on Monday despite a modest rise on Wall Street last week.

The benchmark index fell 47.91 points to 8,464.36 in the first minute of trading.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied 1.17 per cent on Friday for the fifth consecutive gain for blue chips amid hopes the credit crisis may be easing.
