>TOKYO, Dec 18, 2008 (AFP) - Japanese instrument maker Yamaha said Thursday it planned to cut around 750 jobs as the music industry feels the pain of the global economic downturn.

Yamaha Corp. and subsidiary Yamaha Fine Technologies Co. will cut 250 temporary workers, a spokesman said. The company will also eliminate work for 500 contract workers dispatched through temp agencies.

The company has downgraded its business plan for the year, reducing piano output by as much as 14 percent. It now expects to manufacture 38,000 pianos in the year ending in March, the spokesman said.
