Nikkei edges higher

TOKYO - Japan's Nikkei stock average rose 0.5 per cent on Tuesday after US shares surged, with commodities-linked shares such as Mitsui Co Ltd rising following a surge in oil and gold prices.

Canon rose 2.1 per cent to 3,440 yen after the company said on Monday it plans to buy Dutch copier and printer maker Oce for 730 million euros (S$1.51 billion), in a challenge to rivals Ricoh and Xerox.

The Nikkei rose 50.72 points to 9,841.90.

The broader Topix index rose 0.5 per cent to 864.37.
