Asian shares mostly lower

TOKYO

Tokyo share prices closed down 0.54 per cent on Friday amid investor caution following losses on overseas markets and ahead of a long weekend in Japan.

The benchmark Nikkei-225 index lost 51.79 points to 9,497.68 and the broader Topix index of all first-section shares gained 1.00 point, or 0.12 per cent, to 838.71.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong shares closed 0.83 per cent lower on Friday, in line with regional markets and following a loss on Wall Street, dealers said.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index fell 187.32 points to 22,455.84. Turnover was HK$60.50 billion (S$10.84 billion).

SHANGHAI

Chinese shares closed down 0.37 per cent on Friday on profit-taking and renewed concerns that Beijing could tighten its monetary policy, dealers said.

The Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, was 12.27 points lower, at 3,308.35.

The Shanghai A-share index lost 12.90 points, or 0.37 per cent, to 3,469.68, while the Shenzhen A-share index gained 6.64 points, or 0.53 per cent, to 1,268.89.
