Singapore – Shopping mall 313@somerset will be leading an initiative to preserve more than 1500 sq m of the rainforest in Borneo, Indonesia.
This is part of its attempt to mark World Environment Day on June 5 and engage the community in its sustainability initiatives.
The programme aims to save the forests from deforestation for the next 99 years by working with DeforestAction, a collaborative campaign led by TakingITGlobal and Orangutan Outreach.
From May 27 to June 5, shoppers who spend $200 within three same-day receipts will receive coordinates of the patch of rainforest that they are helping to preserve for the next 99 years.
Shoppers can track the progress of this land on DeforestAction’s website www.deforestaction.com
General Manager of 313@somerset, Amy Lim, said rainforests are a vital part of the ecosystem and that their destruction has wide-ranging environmental and social consequences.
“However, we tend to overlook their importance as we are quite disconnected from them.
Through this initiative, we are hoping to personalize the issue of rainforest destruction and engage our shoppers in its preservation by allowing them to monitor specific coordinates of the land.”
These shoppers will be invited to return to the mall on June 5 to sign their names on a recycled tile that will be used by local artists Antz and Zero to create a 2.5m high fashion outfit on 313@somerset, Discovery Walk, from 11am to 8pm.
