LOS ANGELES - TEEN pop princess Hannah Montana elbowed Sylvester Stallone's action hero 'Rambo' down the box office rankings on a record-breaking opening weekend for her concert film, early figures for North America showed.
Disney's 'Hannah Montana,' a screen chronicle of the 15-year-old singer's popular concert tour, became the first film screened exclusively in 3-D to top the box office on its opening, industry tracker Exhibitor Relations said.
Released for one week only in some 680 movie theatres, it banked US$29 million (S$41 million) in North America, with the highest per theatre average takings ever for a film on wide release, Exhibitor Relations said.
The film captures the performances and behind-the-scenes life of the teen idol Miley Cyrus in her television series persona, Hannah Montana.
Another new release, horror flick 'The Eye,' starring Jessica Alba in a remake of a 2002 Chinese-language movie, grossed second-highest with US$13 million.
Romantic comedy '27 Dresses,' about a bridesmaid on a quest for the perfect frock, came in third with US$8.4 million of receipts in its third weekend.
Oscar-nominated hit 'Juno,' a comedy-drama about an unplanned teenage pregnancy, surged back from last week's seventh place to rank fourth with US$7.5 million in its ninth week, for a total of more than 110 million.
Last weekend's box office leader 'Meet the Spartans,' a camp sword-and sandals parody of last year's hit epic '300,' was fifth with 7.1 million.
Just behind was Stallone's comeback as deranged Vietnam war veteran 'Rambo,' a follow-up to the classic 1980s film trilogy, down from second to sixth place with US$7 million in its second week.
In seventh place was 'The Bucket List,' starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, with 6.9 million in its sixth week. The two play cancer patients on a quest to whittle down their life-long wish list before they 'kick the bucket.' Serial killer thriller 'Untraceable' took 5.4 million to come eighth in its second week.
Monster movie 'Cloverfield' fell to ninth, taking US$4.9 million in its third week of release, following a strong opening weekend of more than US$40 million. It has now grossed a total of 72 million.
Tenth spot was taken by dark oil industry epic 'There Will Be Blood,' starring Daniel Day-Lewis, which earned US$4.8 million in its sixth week, buoyed after receiving eight Academy Award nominations two weeks ago.
The top 12 films were rounded out by another new release, romantic comedy 'Over Her Dead Body' (4.6 million) and Nicolas Cage's action-adventure 'National Treasure: Book of Secrets' with three million in its seventh week.
