IT WAS meant to be a hangout for the rich and famous, a swanky new club on the site of the former Europa Country Club Resort and Chequers Hotel.

But a year after former MediaCorp actor Lin Yisheng announced his plans, the club has not even opened for business.

Worse still, a group of workers had lodged complaints against the club to press for some $30,000 in owed wages.

The 28 employees, who made a police report last Tuesday, gave the Celebrities Resort Club until noon on Monday to pay up.

When they were let down again, 12 of them went to the Ministry of Manpower to file a complaint against the club.

Mr Reno Tay, 41, who was hired as a food and beverage manager and owed about $6,000 in wages, said they were all 'very frustrated'.

Not only were some not paid, they had also given up jobs to join the club located at 8 Thomson Lane.

Things had looked promising when former actor Lin, 43, took over the former Europa Country Club Resort and Chequers Hotel with two business partners in January last year.

In an interview with The Straits Times then, he said that the club's gameplan was to attract members using media and sports celebrities.

There would be facilities like a spa, swimming pool, tennis court, poker room, a Japanese restaurant, as well as 20 hotel rooms.

Mr Lin and his partners were reportedly planning to spend between $1 million and $3 million on the club.

But the funds did not come through.
