KUALA LUMPUR - NEWCOMER Faizal Tahir of reality show One In A Million fame - and shirt-stripping infamy - got the most nominations in the 15th edition of the prestigious Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM).

In January, the singer had to make a public apology for removing his shirt and belt while performing live at 8TV's fourth anniversary concert.

He was subsequently banned from TV appearances for three months, while the TV station was barred from airing live or tape-delayed entertainment programmes for the same period.

Faizal was nominated in six categories including Best New Artiste, Best Vocal Performance in an Album (Male) as well as Song of The Year.

Datuk Siti Nurhaliza was not far behind with five nominations, but the popular songbird will be competing against herself as she received multiple nominations in two categories - three in Best Musical Arrangement In a Song and two in Song of the Year.

Dayang Nurfaizah received four nominations while newcomer Atilia, daughter of veteran singer Salamiah Hassan, got three nominations including Best Vocal Performance in an Album (Female).

'I never expected it. It's going to be tough,' said Atilia of her nomination, where she will be competing against Siti and Dayang.

Veteran artiste Sohaimi Mior Hassan, who broke into the music scene in the early 1980s with his popular ballad Epilog Cinta Dari Bromley received a single nomination in Best Vocal Performance in an Album (Male).

Sohaimi released his latest album Suatu Hari Nanti last year after about 20 years without releasing an album."I'm an old man so I'm excited that I've been nominated for the AIM awards," he said.

'This nomination certainly has encouraged me to continue writing songs and come up with new albums in the future,' he said.

This year's AIM has four new categories ? Best Local Chinese Album, Best Local Indian Album, Best Musical Arrangement in a Song (Non Bahasa Malaysia) and Best Malay Song Performed By A Foreign Artiste.

'The new categories are a reflection of the current music industry in Malaysia," said Akademi Industri Muzik Malaysia Association chairman Datuk Aziz Bakar at a press conference on Wednesday announcing the nominations.

The AIM awards night will be held on May 3 at the Putra World Trade Centre here.
