Quake: Jet Li to give more
Wed, May 28, 2008
The Straits Times

HONG KONG - Gongfu star Jet Li has answered criticism that his One Foundation's 1 million yuan (S$196,000) donation to Chinese earthquake relief is not generous enough.

Speaking in Shanghai on Sunday, he said the sum was an immediate donation. 'It doesn't mean we will give only so little.'

He said his foundation has raised more than 60 million yuan for the relief effort.

Ming Pao Daily News said he would go to Sichuan to direct more than 2,000 One Foundation volunteers in rebuilding work. He declined to disclose the amount of his personal donation.

'Many want to know how much I gave. I won't tell you today or ever because size does not matter in charity.'

Another star, Andy Lau, has also raised eyebrows with his donation of 100,000 yuan.

Last week, Chinese director Feng Xiaogang spoke up for Lau. He explained that immediately after the earthquake, industry insiders did not know the scale of the disaster.

Feng said they discussed the matter and decided to set the ball rolling with donations of 100,000 yuan each.
