Why Wynners are still together

IT'S the season of baby-boomer band reunions. Singapore concert-goers recently enjoyed the performances of The Police and The Osmonds, and now they will get to see Wynners, a hit Hong Kong pop band from the 1970s.

These latest golden oldies seem to have struck the right note here - over 90 per cent of tickets to their concert at the Singapore Indoor Stadium tomorrow had been sold at press time yesterday.

It was back in 1974 that the quintet released their first studio album. Vocalists Alan Tam, 57, and Kenny Bee, 55, went on to score solo success in the 1980s, but unlike most bands, Wynners never formally disbanded.

This is perhaps a testament to the way they get along so well, which is seen during a joke-peppered press session at the Mandarin Oriental Singapore on Wednesday.

The other band members are guitarist Bennett Pang, 59, bass guitarist Danny Yip, 58, and drummer Anthony Chan, 55. However, Chan is not present at the press session as he is on a business trip in Britain, and he will perform at the show via satellite.
