BEIJING - ONE of China's top rock stars, detained since Sept, has been formally arrested in connection with mob-related violence, state media said on Thursday.

Zang Tianshuo, 44, a household name in China, runs a bar in in northern Hebei province, near Beijing, which had been investigated over several gang fights in the stability-obsessed capital, Xinhua news agency said.

Zang was voted the most popular mainland singer-songwriter at the 9th Chinese Music Awards in 2003.

Xinhua quoted police sources as saying Zang was originally detained on Sept 28.

'They said the police investigation had taken quite some time because the case was complicated and involved criminal gangs,' Xinhua said without specifying an exact charge. -- REUTERS
