"Star Trek," the remake of the classic 1960s TV series, boldly went straight to the top of the British box office over the weekend but failed to match the opening take of last week's X-Men prequel.
Under the control of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock, the starship Enterprise took 5.95 million pounds compared with the X-Men's 6.65 million, despite playing in 11 more cinemas, according to Screen International.
The week's other big newcomer, spooky animated movie "Coraline," came in at number two with a 2.43 million-pound take.
Razor-clawed Hugh Jackman in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," was down from top spot to third, just above Disney's "Hannah Montana: The Movie," starring Miley Cyrus, which was down at four from two.
Matthew McConaughey in romantic comedy "The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" was down one place at five while political thriller "State of Play" fell to six from three with Russell Crowe exposing corruption as an investigative reporter.
Teen comedy "17 Again" slipped two places to seven with Matthew Perry as a middle-aged man morphing into Zac Efron as his former 17-year-old self.
Also down two, to eight, was 3-D blockbuster "Monsters Vs Aliens" while "I Love You, Man" was down one at nine with Paul Rudd as a geeky estate agent looking for a cool buddy.
Vin Diesel in car-chase thriller "Fast and Furious" was down three places at 10.
