PETALING JAYA, Malaysia: Hundreds of Michael Jackson fans thronged the main entrance of 1Utama shopping complex here last night to pay tribute to the late King of Pop.
The event, organised by Sony Music Malaysia, moved many to tears as they sang along to his songs while video clips of the legend who died last Thursday were played.
A huge banner was put up for fans to sign and write their condolence messages on. Sony Music Malaysia will send the banner to Jackson's management company in the United States.
Event emcee Datuk Yasmin Yusoff told the crowd she had goosebumps from watching his video clips.
"I can't believe he's gone and it really is a great loss to the world," she said.
Emotions ran high when the song Heal the World and Gone Too Soon were played. Many were seen sobbing and carrying placards professing their love for the legend.
Fans said Jackson had touched the lives of many through his moving performances, music and the messages carried in his songs.
Aric Ho, a local artiste with Mob Media, broke down in tears and was seen ushered away by his manager.
"I can't believe he's gone as he'd inspired me in so many ways, especially in my career," said a visibly distraught Ho.
Brothers Virandra, 12, and Novendra Jaisi, 16, who were dressed like their idol, said they too could not believe that Jackson was gone.
Virandra, 12, said he first heard of the news while he was in school and was too upset to concentrate on the day's lessons.
The brothers said they celebrated Jackson's birthday every year and would even cut a cake to mark his birthday.
Radio deejay Pietro Felix of Mix FM said he grew up listening to Jackson's songs.
"Back in school, my friends and I would get together before school started for the day and tried to do all his moves," he said.
The event also saw fans of the pop legend going on stage to give speeches and eulogies. Some also recited poems.
There were also performances by Jackson impersonators who belted out his songs and strutted his all-time famous move, the Moonwalk. -The Star/ANN
