WHEN you see an act by Kumar, who is known for cross-dressing, does it raise any eyebrow?
What would your reaction be when you see the star of Victor/Victoria cross-dressing?
Critics have questioned how it is marketed as a family musical due to the underlying relationships that the characters share.
However, the male leads, Matt Grey and Jake Macapagal, agree that there is no offensive or explicit content that will be in conflict with Singapore's conservative society.
"Why is it that Jack Neo can get away with dressing up and acting as an old lady, 'Liang Po Po' and no one finds that to be offensive?
"This musical is not offensive and neither is there foul or explicit content. If a television broadcaster can do it, then Victor/Victoria is no exception," says Matt Grey who stars as Carroll Todd.
Adapted from the 1982 movie, Victor/Victoria is a celebration of love and friendship that transcends gender and cultural boundaries.
With nothing more than the clothes on her back and a fiery determination to fulfil her dreams, singer Victoria Grant (Laura Fygi) arrives in Paris jobless.
During an unexpected run-in with a down-and-out Carroll Todd, he convinced her to pretend to be a female impersonator in order to be noticed.
To complicate matters, a gangster from Chicago, King Marchan (Jake Macapagal) falls in love with "Victor" and struggles to understand why Victoria must make a decision between her passion and true love.
Victor/Victoria is playing at the Esplanade till November 29, 2009.Tickets available at SISTIC.
