KUALA LUMPUR - A television show about singing and dancing teenagers has taken the world and now Malaysia, by storm.
Local fans of the US television show Glee love its spunky routines and covers of famous rock and pop classics so much they staged a Glee-inspired flash mob dance yesterday.
Shoppers at The Gardens, Mid Valley were surprised by over 300 Gleeks who grooved to a medley of songs such as Queen's Somebody to Love and Tina Turner's Proud Mary.
Many quickly whipped out their mobile phones and cameras to record the lively crowd which danced in the centre court and on the different floors.
While teenagers made up the bulk of the participants, mother-daughter teams were common, too. Spotted among the crowd were activist Datuk Marina Mahathir and her daughter.
"It was over so fast. I wanted to do it again," she said excitedly.
For 9-year-old Ines Sofia who was there with her cousin, she was only combining the two things she loved -- dancing and Glee.
"I practised the routines via YouTube," she said as her mother and fellow Glee fan Irena Bosra watched supportively.
The organiser, RandomAlphabets, spent a week organising it and another week teaching the routines.
Participants came to know about the event via social networking sites.
Practice sessions were held at The Gardens Hotel ballroom. Video tutorials were also uploaded on YouTube for those who could not make it.
"Of all the flash mobs that we've organised, this is the first that uses dance," RandomAlphabets project manager Zain H.D. said.
"We wanted people to be able to come together, meet new people and have fun at the same time."
RandomAlphabets also organised numerous flash mobs in the Klang Valley including KL Freeze in Unison, Reading While Waiting Project, Merdeka Train Party and Tali Tenang.
