Singer Selina Jen, the "S" of the popular pop group S.H.E., married yesterday in a ceremony presided over by President Ma Ying-jeou in Taipei, capping a storied year after suffering from serious burns in a filming accident in mainland China last October.
The list of some 1,000 guests at the ceremony reads like a "who's who" of the Taiwan entertainment industry, business leaders and political figures including her S.H.E. comrades Hebe Tien and Ella Chen, A-listers such as Amei Chang, Jolin Tsai, Leehom Wang and Chilin Lin, Taiwan tycoon Terry Gou, Premier Wu Den-yih and Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng, among others.
The stars were attending mostly as the bride's friends and the political and business figures as guests of the bridegroom, Richard Chang. Also attending the banquet were the medical team that treated Jen in the past year.
The bride, dressed in three gowns with elbow long gloves for the duration of the ceremony to cover the pressure garment that is assisting in her recovery, spent most of the time at the ceremony sitting due to her health conditions. The newlyweds skipped quite a few Chinese wedding traditions, including one that forbids the couple from staying in the same building the night before the wedding, to help Jen cope with the physical challenge of holding a wedding ceremony.
President Ma said he came to keep his promise to bridegroom's father, former lawmaker Chang Shih-lang, and more importantly to express his admiration of Jen's kindness, beauty and courage. The president quoted lyrics from songs by the pop group in his blessing to the couple.
Lin Chih-hung, the convener of Jen's medical team, praised her as the "bravest and most beautiful bride" as well as a cooperative patient who sets good examples for other burn patients.
Jen was injured in an accident on Oct. 22, 2010, when an explosion shot in a TV show went wrong in Shanghai. She suffered from third-degree burns on her back and legs, covering a total over 50 per cent of her body. The accident put Jen's career on hold and put her up against a difficult recovery possess. The singer had to propone her wedding from April to October.
While the media widely praised Jen for her optimism and courage in dealing with the burn injuries, intense coverage on her recovery, her wedding plan and her future career had added to the couple's challenges as well as those of Jen's friends.
