Malaysia-based actor Aaron Aziz is Singapore's most popular star in the social media universe. The inaugural Social Star Awards named him the top Singapore Actor, perhaps surprisingly over MediaCorp Channel 8 artistes Fann Wong and Jeanette Aw.
Another unexpected result: Reggae icon Bob Marley is the top Jamaican Musician, more than three decades after he died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 36.
The Social Star Awards, dubbed by its organisers as the Oscars of the social media world, is a 24-hour online event recognising global stars on 11 of the world's most popular social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Sina and Weibo from China and VK from Russia.
Since midnight on Wednesday, more than 100 awards have been announced. The winners were notified on social media platforms such as Twitter. More than 280 winners will be announced.
The top awards were presented at a three-hour ceremony at Marina Bay Sands on Thursday, which was streamed live on YouTube.
Winners do not receive trophies or other tokens, just the assurance from knowing they are stars in the social media world.
Some winners responded, also on social media. Jamie Oliver, who won the 2013 United Kingdom Chef Award, tweeted: "Wow! Thanks guys that is a huge honour, So cool thanks to all. JOXX."
Sports Brand category winner Adidas tweeted: "Thank you! We are all super happy #bigsmiles."
In many categories, the winners were entirely predictable. Psy, the South Korean singer who went viral on YouTube last year for his hit Gangnam Style, bagged the 2013 South Korean Musician Award. Pewdiepie, another sensation on YouTube for his entertaining game commentary, bagged 2013 Sweden Social Star Award.
Fans of the 39-year-old Hello Kitty will be glad to know the mouthless cat continues to charm fans the world over on social media platforms. She won the 2013 Japan TV Social Star Award.
