SINGAPORE - On the last night of 2011, 12-year-old Royce Chan stood alone in the dark, candle in hand and head full of hopes for the new year.
Amid the many pictures of countdown parties, feasting and revelry submitted to Stomp's Party Time contest, the student's thoughtful entry was a breath of fresh air.
The photo was composed by his cousin, Edwin Tan, 27.
He explained the message behind the photograph. He said: "While most people would be out celebrating New Year's Eve with family and friends, those less fortunate might not have the chance.
"So, we hit upon the idea of getting Royce to close his eyes and make a wish for the New Year, and for the less fortunate."
The picture earns him the top spot in the Stomp contest. He wins an 80GB iPod Classic.
Meanwhile, 20-year-old polytechnic student Cheryl Lee took second place, with her photo of her best friends and her on a night out in town on New Year's Eve.
In contrast, part-time tutor Jamie Goh, 23, spent the day in a more unusual fashion - running long distance with fellow running enthusiasts at Changi Beach. She came in third in the contest.
Cheryl wins an Altec Lansing speaker system, while Jamie receives a Logitech Webcam.
