She cried to ex about boyfriend
The woman on the other end of the telephone line was upset and crying.
The man she had met online had lied to her, she alleged. Not only was he more than a decade older than her, he even had a wife and kids.
That was what Miss Elsie Lie, 24, claimed to her ex-boyfriend in the phone call early last year.
But still, she carried on the relationship, and even talked of marriage.
Last week, things went horribly wrong.
Miss Lie was found murdered on Saturday morning in a 14th-storey flat in Block 633, Jurong West Street 65, where she rented a room.
Her eyeballs were found in a field near her block.
Her boyfriend, Gabriel Lee, 38, was arrested at the scene and charged with her murder on Sunday.
It is not clear if his divorce proceedings, which were still ongoing in 2010, have been finalised.
Miss Lie's ex-boyfriend, who gave his name only as Jack, 26, told Lianhe Wanbao that she had called him early last year, crying that her boyfriend had lied to her about his age and marital status.
"She discovered that her boyfriend was more than a decade older than her, and even had a wife and kids," he said.
