PM Lee urges Singaporeans to strengthen "heartware"

SINGAPORE - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong urged Singaporeans to strengthen their "heartware", which refers to the love for the nation and loyalty to Singapore.

Speaking at the National Day dinner for residents at his Ang Mo Kio constituency on Saturday, PM Lee said that Singapore's "hardware" is being taken care of in the form of more HDB flats, MRT lines and buses, while the "software" are the policies that make Singapore work.

But he added that citizens will need to develop the spirit, values and emotional ties, that make us proud to be Singaporeans.

Mr Lee stressed that everyone has a part to play in helping one another and participating in community life. He cited mutual respect, care and compassion for other citizens, meritocracy and integrity as the intangible factors that need to be strengthened.

Mr Lee also shared with the Ang Mo Kio residents gathered about upgrading plans for the constituency under the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme, where shared facilities will be upgraded.
