Laura Ong: 3rd Punggol grassroots staff in scandal

Laura Ong is the third grassroots staff from Punggol South to have fallen from grace as a result of a scandal in the last four years.

The 33-year-old, who had an affair with ex-Punggol East MP Michael Palmer, was a constituency director of the Punggol South ward from 2006 to 2011, before she was transferred to the Pasir Ris West ward last year to work directly under DPM Teo Chee Hean.

In 2009, Mark Chow, a Young PAP member who is active in the Punggol South ward, was convicted of molesting two women, an aspiring model and a pub operations manager. Chow was formerly a TV actor, who also owns a modelling agency.

In 2010, another grassroots leader from Punggol South, Danny Soo, was convicted of taking some 200 upskirt videos of unsuspecting women with a camera pen.

He was a rising star and had been awarded a Public Service Medal before the scandal broke. But Soo had since been removed from his posts as the chairman of the Punggol Park Community Club Management Committee, and the Punggol South Citizens Consultative Committee.

A former colleague of Laura Ong and Danny Soo told RazorTV the spate of scandals involving grassroots leaders from the same ward was probably mere coincidence.

"If you ask me, it's 2012, we're so Westernised, [it's] nothing new. It's just some people's behavior. And it just happens that it's Punggol South, it's close to our area."

The source was most taken aback by Miss Laura Ong's resignation. "She's very professional. Her work, her commitment, and her knowledge about her work is really fantastic. She's very good, that's why I'm very taken aback. Very, very surprised."

When asked whether the whistleblower of these cases could have been someone working in the same team, the source said it was "likely".

A statement from the People's Association is not available as of now.
