BEIJING - MALAYSIA'S Wong Mew Choo pulled off a stunning upset on Sunday, eclipsing China's top seed and former world number one Xie Xingfang to win the China Open women's singles title.
Wong, who eliminated Olympic champion Zhang Ning of China in the last round, clinched the super series tournament crown in the southern city of Guangzhou with a 21-16, 8-21, 21-17 win in just over one hour.
Prospects for a home triumph looked bright when Chinese women took three of the four semi-final berths on Saturday.
But that was before Wong, who defeated world champion Zhu Lin in the quarter finals, dumped Zhang out of the last four and then played even better to overpower Xie, whom she beat in the world championships in August.
In the men's singles, China's number three seed Bao Chunlai took a measure of revenge with a 21-12, 21-13 final victory over Malaysia's top male player Lee Chong Wei, the number two seed.
The victory was sweet for Bao, who watched as China's top seed and tournament favourite Lin Dan was dumped out of the tournament in his first match by unseeded Park Sung-Hwan of South Korea, who Bao eliminated in the semis on Saturday.
Lin, one of the favourites to clinch a gold medal for China at next year's Beijing Games, has had a history of trouble against Park, winning twice and losing twice in their four previous encounters.
China's only other title was provided by women's doubles pair Gao Ling and Zhao Tingting, the fifth seeds, who defeated Du Jing and Yu Yang 17-21, 21-15, 21-8 in an all-China final.
Indonesia clinched two titles, with Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan, seeded third, winning the men's doubles from Guo Zhendong and Xie Zhongbo of China 21-12 and 21-19.
Nova Widianto and Liliyana Natsir, second seeds, beat Thailand's Sudket Prapakamol and Saralee Thoungthongkam 15-21, 21-18, 21-11 for the mixed doubles crown. -- AFP
