BANGKOK, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Filipino Juvic Pagunsan fired a seven-under-par 65 to take the lead in the second round of the Volvo Masters of Asia on Friday.
Pagunsan amassed eight birdies, four on the outward nine, but spoiled his round with a bogey at the final hole to finish just one stroke ahead of New Zealander Mark Brown in the Asian Tour's season-ending finale.
"I had a really good round, my driving was good but the key was my putting," Pagunsan told reporters.
"My confidence is really high, I trust myself. My short game was good. I just need to keep it together over the next
few days.
"Brown had six birdies in a blemish-free round to take second spot ahead of Thai Prom Meesawat, whose six birdies and a lone bogey gave him a 67, seven under par for the tournament and level with Australian Scott Hend and first-round leader Scott Strange.
China's Liang Wenchong, all but assured of the Asian Tour championship having led it since May, trailed at one under par after a 71 on his second round.
"The front nine was good, the back nine wasn't," he said.
"I made some bad shots and had some problems."
Liang must ensure he beats Thai Chapchai Nirat, the only other contender for the overall title, who needs to win this event with Liang finishing outside the top three.
He carded a three-under-par 69, four-under for the tournament, but bemoaned his performance on the Thai Country Club course.
"I was not consistent - birdie, bogey, birdie," he said.
"My style is aggressive and to go out for birdies. I need to do that tomorrow."
