Singapore's golden sports couple Ronald Susilo and Li Jiawei have broken up.
According to a Shin Min report, they have broken up on amicable terms since last week.
Indonesia-born Susilo represented Singapore in badminton, while the China-born Li represented the country in table tennis. Both announced their engagement publicly in September 2004. But just over two years later, there were rumours of their impending break-up. However, both parties denied the rumours to be true.
When a Shin Min reporter contacted Ronald Susilo yesterday evening, he confirmed news of his break-up with Li Jiawei.
Shin Min quoted Susilo as saying: "We have parted, but did so after much discussion. The break-up was amicable and we did not quarrel. We can still be friends."
Susilo also added that he has not been in contact with Li lately, and hopes to allow some time for all parties involved some breathing space. However, he did not dismiss the possibility that they will still be on friendly terms who can meet for the occasional meals and drinks.
He had no further comments to add to the above and only wishes to focus his attention on upcoming competition.
Li could not be reached for comment as she is currently competing in Japan.
