CHARLOTTE, US - AMERICAN Anthony Kim reeled off four birdies on the front nine to take the lead midway through the Wachovia Championship third round on Saturday.

The 22-year-old, seeking his first victory on the PGA Tour, was 11 under par for the event at the turn.

Jason Bohn, the overnight leader, was one stroke adrift while fellow American Stewart Cink was third on eight-under 208 after a 65.

Kim started the day two behind Bohn and took only two holes to catch up, claiming a birdie at the first before his rival bogeyed the second.

Two more birdies put Kim in good heart before he rolled in a nine-foot birdie putt at the ninth.

Cink moved into contention with a seven-under-par display that included an eagle, six birdies and one bogey.

He was initially penalised two strokes for grounding his hand inside a hazard line beside the 17th green but officials eventually let him off.

'Clumsily I used my hand to balance to get down really low and look at the putt and my hand happened to be inside the hazard line,' said Cink, who summoned a rules official.

The official checked the rulebook and called the penalty on Cink before reading deeper into the regulations and discovering a player can ground a hand to stay balanced. - REUTERS
