MONACO - MCLAREN'S Heikki Kovalainen smashed his car against the Monaco barriers after setting the fastest lap in Saturday's wet final practice before qualifying for Sunday's grand prix.
On a damp circuit after overnight rain, the Finn spun and broke his car's rear suspension as he clouted the metal guardrail while exiting the swimming pool complex.
Kovalainen, who owned up to making a mistake, had just set the fastest lap of one minute 16.567 seconds.
The session was red-flagged and a further shower slowed proceedings after the session resumed, with nobody managing to improve on Kovalainen's earlier time in the remaining 34 minutes.
Kovalainen's team mate Lewis Hamilton, quickest in Thursday's practice, was second fastest with a time 0.517 seconds slower.
Ferrari's world champion Kimi Raikkonen was third on the timesheets with Germany's Nico Rosberg fourth for Williams and Poland's Robert Kubica fifth in a BMW Sauber.
Raikkonen leads his Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa and Hamilton by seven points in the standings ahead of Sunday's race, the glamour highlight of the grand prix season.
McLaren won last year's race in Monaco with double world champion Fernando Alonso ahead of Hamilton in the Briton's rookie season.
