MONACO - SURPRISE pole-sitter Felipe Massa led the Monaco Grand Prix from McLaren's Lewis Hamilton in the early stages of this famous street circuit race.
Hamilton, starting from third on the second row, got off to a perfect start to pass defending champion Kimi Raikkonen who was alongside his Ferrari teammate on the front row.
It promises to be a demanding afternoon with rain making driving conditions hazardous.
Hamilton's McLaren teammate Heikki Kovalainen was originally due to start alongside the Briton on the second row but stalled on the grid in the practise lap and set off from the pit lane.
Massa, starting from pole for the first time on this famous street track which he says he hates, is trying to become the first Ferrari driver since Jody schecklter back in 1979 to win from pole.
Briton David Coulthard was demoted from 10th to 15th before the start after his Red Bull team had to change the gearbox on his car in qualifying. -- AFP
