LONDON - A FURIOUS Liverpool have told Chelsea that Spanish striker Fernando Torres is not for sale - at any price.
Chelsea were reportedly preparing a world record bid of ?50 million (S$134.6 million) to lure Torres after his stunning debut season in the Premier League, in which he scored 32 goals.
But Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks ridiculed the notion that the club needed money for a new stadium.
He said: 'There is no circumstance in which Torres will be sold. It is ludicrous.'
Torres, 24, also indicated that he was staying put. 'This was only my first season at Liverpool and I want to play better for many more yet. This is my team, my city and Anfield is my pitch,' he said.
Meanwhile, Spanish newspapers said Real Madrid continue to be hopeful of landing Cristiano Ronaldo.
Real are ready to pay an estimated ?150 million - ?39.8million in cash as well as offering Robinho, Sergio Ramos and Mahamadou Diarra in exchange.
The winger was offered ?7.6 million a year for five years.
Club president Ramon Calderon said on Monday that 'it is up to the player to commit himself publicly'.
