3,000 to take part in weekend S'pore dragon boat festival race

BEDOK Reservoir will be bustling with more than 3,000 paddlers who will compete in the Singapore Dragon Boat Festival 2008.

Organised by the People's Association (PA) Water-Venture Section (WVS) and the Singapore Dragon Boat Association (SDBA), the festival is supported by the Public Utilities Board (PUB), the National Parks Board (Nparks) and Temasek Polytechnic.

Over the last five years, there has been an increase in the number of Dragon Boat interest groups coming forth to compete at the national level.

Battling for the Prime Minister's Challenge Trophy - a major highlight of the festival - will be teams from the local Universities (National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, the Singapore Institute of Management and the Singapore Management University).

This event is competed over a distance of 1,000 metres. Primarily dominated by the men, this year will see the second women's Trophy.

This year's festival also features two novelty 300m races - the T-Net Clubs race and the PA-Grassroots Councils race.

The regular distance of the festival is 800 metres for all categories.

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs will be the Guest-of-Honour.
